Tree City USA
Hannon A. Templeton Park
The Tree City USA Advisory Board is an Oak Island Advisory Board dedicated to preserving and protecting the natural resources of this area as development continues. A chief mission is the preservation of heritage or specimen trees by promotion of conservation and fostering smart development such as low impact development (LID) practices and stormwater best management practices (BMPs) to minimize the impact of construction on the canopy or root systems. The composition of the Tree City USA Advisory Board is as follows:
A pamphlet, Trees for Oak Island, was prepared by the Tree City USA board as an educational tool for residents on the types of trees and vegetation that thrive in this coastal environment. Materials used in the preparation of the pamphlet were provided by the Brunswick and New Hanover county offices of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. A special acknowledgement is also made for David Nash, a former Extension Agent, who has shared his knowledge of trees and horticulture for years and was a key figure in developing the Live Oak propagation program. This publication was prepared by the Tree City USA Advisory Board and paid for, in part, with money from the Oak Island Tree Preservation Trust Fund. The Trust Fund was established in October 2006 and donations are used to educate the public on the value of preserving one of Oak Island's unique resources. If you would like to make a contribution to the Trust Fund, please make a check payable to the Oak Island Tree Preservation Trust Fund and mail to:
